Figurative painting has always held a special appeal for me ever since my days at art school I enjoy sorting out the difficulties that crop up as I work; finding the exact composition, laying correct emphasis to the parts until I reach the ‘wholeness’. I like to think that what I do has a range of responses and is accessible.

The Ritzy is a significant landmark on the route through Brixton. One early summer evening I found myself walking towards this particular cinema to see the film Prometheus. The sight of the people drinking and eating at the outside bar would later inspire me to make this painting.

About My current work

The figurative tradition is still there and I like to think that I am a part of it. Responding directly to what we see around us has always been there and painting provides me with the visual language to do this. I like to think that what I do has a range of available responses and that it is accessible. These paintings based around London present a moment we might see on any day and I have tried to avoid capturing it not just a fragment of time but rather present it as an anticipation of what might come next.
